How-to Scan a Neckband with a Handheld Reader
The eShepherd Neckband can be associated with an animal's EID tag or Visual tag. This can be done using the eShepherd Mobile App on a phone paired to a Gallagher handheld reader.
The Gallagher HR0, HR4 and HR5 handheld readers can all be paired with the eShepherd Mobile App. Which connection type works depends on the reader version and your phone:
Reader | Version | Connectivity | Android | iOS | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
Gallagher HR4/ HR5 | v2 | Bluetooth | Supported | Not Supported | iOS cannot connect via Bluetooth Classic (not working on iOS 18 and above) |
Gallagher HR4/ HR5 | v2 | WiFi | Supported | Supported | Both Android and iOS can connect via WiFi |
Gallagher HR4/ HR5 | v3 | Bluetooth | Supported | Supported | Both platforms support Bluetooth connection |
Gallagher HR4/ HR5 | v3 | WiFi | Not Supported | Not Supported | V3 does not include WiFi capability |
Gallagher HR0 | v1 | Bluetooth | Supported | Supported | |
Gallagher HR0 | v1 | WiFi | Not Supported | Not Supported |

The Neckband has an RFID tag inside its housing. This RFID / EID tag can be scanned using the handheld reader.

Note, some operators have a ‘panel reader’ installed on their crush as part of their weighing system. The Neckband EID could interfere with this operation, as it might read both the animals EID tag, and the Neckband EID tag.
To prevent a ‘double read’ the EID tag inside the Neckband has been ‘shielded’ to make it less sensitive to a panel reader. However, this also makes it difficult to read with a handheld reader.
The video below demonstrates the best way to read the EID tag inside the Neckband using an HR5 wand.
