# How to use map layers

Map layers let you choose what you see on your property map. You can show or hide animals, neckbands, infrastructure, fences, paddocks and your own uploaded layers, so the map only shows what you need right now.

The map layers sit on the left side of the map as a bar of icons. Each icon controls one type of layer. Hover over an icon to see its name.

For what each icon on the map means, see [Description of Icons on the Map](https://help.eshepherd.com/en/article/description-of-icons-on-the-map-d7npwi/).

## Showing and hiding layers

Click an icon to show or hide that layer. When a layer is hidden, its icon is greyed out.

Some icons open a panel with more options: **Animals**, **Neckbands**, **Future Schedule**, **Inactive and In Storage**, and **My Layers**. In the panel, use the eye icon next to each item to show or hide it, or the eye icon at the top to show or hide everything in that panel.

Moving fence layers only appear if your property uses moving fences.

## Animals

Click the Animals icon (the cow at the top of the bar) to choose which animals are shown on the map.

| Layer | What it shows |
| ---- | ---- |
| **Animal in Mob** | Animals in a mob, shown in the mob's colour |
| **Animal not in Mob** | Animals that are not in a mob, shown in green |
| **Unfenced** | Animals with no active virtual fence |
| **Temporary Unfenced** | Animals that are temporarily unfenced |
| **Not Communicating** | Animals whose neckband has not communicated recently |
| **Faulty Neckband** | Animals wearing a neckband that has been marked as faulty |

## Neckbands

Click the Neckbands icon to choose which neckbands that are not fitted to an animal are shown on the map.

| **Not Communicating** | Unfitted neckbands that have not communicated recently |
| **Faulty Neckband** | Neckbands that have been marked as faulty |

## Fences and Paddocks

Each fence and paddock line style has its own icon in the map layers, so you can show or hide each type separately.

| Icon | Layer |
| ---- | ---- |
| Solid blue line | Moving Fences - Active |
| Blue dashed line with black outline | Moving Fences - Next Schedule |
| Solid orange line | Virtual Paddocks - Active |
| Orange dashed line with black outline | Virtual Paddocks - Next Schedule |
| Yellow dashed line with black outline | Future Schedule (opens a panel for Virtual Paddocks and Moving Fences) |
| Yellow dashed line | Inactive and In Storage (opens a panel for Virtual Paddocks - Inactive and Virtual Paddocks - In Storage) |
| White double line | Physical Paddocks |

VPs in storage are hidden from the map by default. To learn more, see [Managing your virtual paddocks](https://help.eshepherd.com/en/article/managing-your-virtual-paddocks-6r8x0d/).

## My Layers

Click the **Layers** button at the bottom of the map layers to show, hide or upload your own map layers. To learn more, see [Importing Map Layers with "My Layers"](https://help.eshepherd.com/en/article/importing-map-layers-with-my-layers-kr22sw/).

## Summary

This guide covers how to use the map layers on the left side of the map to show or hide animals, neckbands, infrastructure, fences, paddocks and your own uploaded layers. Showing only what you need keeps your map clear and makes it easier to manage your property.
