Frequently Asked Questions
1. Should I worry about battery temperature or device overheating?
The eShepherd Neckband uses lithium iron phosphate batteries, known for their high-temperature resilience and stable chemistry. This prevents overheating or thermal runaway issues.
2. Who can I contact for support?
Reach out to the customer success team at:
eshepherd.support@gallagher.com
3. What does a flashing orange LED on the Neckband mean?
For cellular neckbands, a flashing orange LED indicates the device is attempting to connect to the LTE-M network.
4. Can I connect the Base Station to the internet using a Starlink Terminal?
Yes, while we don’t provide a complete solution, we enable connectivity between the eShepherd Base Station and a Starlink Terminal. However, setup and maintenance are your responsibility.
5. How much sunlight does the neckband require?
The neckband needs about 4 hours of direct sunlight every 24 hours to maintain battery charge.
6. What is the warranty period for Neckbands?
Each neckband comes with a 3-year warranty.
7. What happens if network communication fails?
In case of network failure, virtual paddocks remain active for up to 24 hours. After that, if communication isn't restored, virtual fences will deactivate, allowing animals to roam.
8. Can neckbands be used on bulls?
Yes, neckbands are suitable for bulls. For larger breeds like Angus or Herefords, you may need longer chains for a proper fit. Regularly check that the fit is comfortable and doesn’t cause rubbing or discomfort.
9. What if an animal breaks out of the virtual paddock?
If an animal attempts to leave, the neckband issues up to 3 audio tones and 3 pulses. If the animal doesn’t respond, it can leave the paddock but can return at any time without receiving additional stimuli.
10. What notifications and alerts does the Neckband send?
You can enable push notifications and customize alerts in the web app under the settings menu.
11. What is the maximum size for a Virtual Paddock?
The length of each virtual fence segment must be less than 40 km (25 miles), which usually exceeds typical requirements. Consult your eShepherd representative for specific needs.
12. How accurate is the GPS positioning on the Neckband?
GPS accuracy depends on several factors, including proximity to virtual fences and satellite availability. The most accurate reading, about ±1 meter, occurs when the animal is within 20 meters of a virtual fence.
13. How many exclusion zones can I create?
Currently, you can create one exclusion zone within an inclusion zone. Future updates will allow multiple exclusion zones.
14. What is the maximum number of vertices a virtual paddock can have?
A virtual paddock can have up to 30 vertices, which also applies to exclusion zones.
15. How do I turn on the Neckbands?
To activate a neckband, hold the magnet key near the LED. Once you hear the audio tone, remove the magnet and wait for the startup tune. The LED will flash green every 10 seconds once connected to the network.
16. How long does it take for an animal down notification to appear?
The neckband will report if it notices the animal hasn’t moved much. If the animal has been inactive for more than 10% of the past 24 hours, you’ll receive a notification. This means that if the neckband has been actively reporting and doesn’t detect any movement for at least 2.4 hours in a row, the system will alert you. This way, you’ll quickly know if something unusual might be affecting your animal’s activity.
