How to manage animals in eShepherd

This article explains how to manage your animals using the Animals panel in the eShepherd web app. You can filter the animal list, view individual animal details, view animal tracks, create and edit animal records, and delete animals.

About neckbands and animals. When neckbands are first assigned to your eShepherd account, they appear in the Neckbands panel under Unfitted Neckbands. To appear as animals on the map and in the Animals list, each neckband needs to be associated with an animal record. This process links the neckband to an animal identity in the system.

Viewing animal details

Step 1. Select Animals from the top navigation bar to open the Animals panel. The list shows all animals across your property with their neckband ID, current VP, and last updated time.

Step 2. To narrow the list, tap a filter tag at the top of the panel. A range of filters is available including mob, stock class, VP status, battery, and more — tap any filter tag to narrow the list.

Step 3. Click on an animal in the list to open its detail card. This shows the animal's key details including identification, breed, current VP, and neckband.

Viewing animal tracks

Step 1. To view the animal's tracks, tap History in the detail card. A date range selector will appear beneath the card.

Step 2. Set the From and To dates using the calendar picker to define the period you want to review, then tap Show.

Step 3. The animal's track will be drawn on the map as a trail with timestamped points. Hover over any point on the track to see what VPs they were in, and more.

Create, Edit, and Delete animals

Creating a single animal

Step 1. Tap the plus icon in the bottom-right toolbar and select Create Single Animal from the menu. The Create Animal panel will open.

Step 2. Select the neckband to associate with this animal, then fill in at least one identifier — either a VID (visual ID tag) or EID (electronic ID tag). Other fields such as breed, stock class, and mob are optional. Once done, tap the tick button to save the record. A success message will confirm the animal has been created and it will appear immediately in the Animals list.

Editing an animal

Step 1. To edit an existing animal's details, select it from the list and tap the pencil edit icon in the bottom toolbar. The edit form will open, allowing you to update the animal's details such as identification, breed, mob assignment, and weight.

Step 2. Tap the tick to save. The animal detail card will update immediately to reflect your changes.

Deleting an animal

To delete an animal, select it from the Animals list and tap the delete (bin) icon in the bottom toolbar. Deleted animals are permanently removed from the property. Take care to confirm you have the correct animal selected before proceeding.

Bulk creating animals

If you have a lot of animals to add, the bulk upload spreadsheet is the easiest way to get them all in at once. In the Animals list, tap the plus icon in the bottom-right toolbar and select Bulk Create - Download File. This downloads a spreadsheet with all your unfitted neckbands already listed.

For each neckband you want to associate with an animal, fill in the animal's VID (the tag in the animal's ear) or EID (the electronic tag number), or both if you have them. Set the Action column to Create. If there are neckbands you're not ready to assign yet, just leave those rows blank and they'll stay as unfitted neckbands.

The spreadsheet also has optional fields like breed, stock class, date of birth, and weight — fill those in if you have the information handy.

Once you're done, save and close the file, then come back to the Animals panel and select Bulk Create - Upload File. Browse for your saved file and follow the on-screen prompts to complete the upload. Your animals will appear on the map straight away.

You may also refer to the Mobile App Guides if you'd rather associate neckbands one at a time out in the paddock using a Gallagher handheld EID reader paired with the eShepherd mobile app.

Change List Layout

The Animals list can be displayed in different layouts to suit how you prefer to work. Tap the layout icon in the top-right corner of the Animals panel to switch between views.

Table view shows animals in a compact list with sortable columns. You can customise which columns are visible by tapping the column icon. This view works well when you want to scan across multiple data points quickly.

Card view displays each animal as a tile with key details at a glance. Filters appear across the top of the panel so you can quickly narrow down your list. This is a good general-purpose view for day-to-day use.

Card - Detail view shows additional information on each card for a bit more context without needing to open each animal individually.

VP Activation is Managed at Mob Level

VP activation is now managed at the mob level, making it simpler to keep your animals contained and your paddock rotations running smoothly.

When an animal is assigned to a mob, it will automatically inherit the mob's active VP. Moving an animal to a different mob will pick up that mob's VP straight away, and removing an animal from a mob will deactivate its VP automatically — no extra steps needed.

If you have previously activated VPs on individual animals, that option is no longer available. Managing everything through mobs gives you a cleaner, more consistent way to run your virtual fencing.

Summary

This guide covers the key animal management tools available in the Animals panel — filtering by mob or other attributes, viewing individual animal details, viewing animal tracks, creating and editing animal records, and bulk importing.
