How to assign animals with no mob and activate a virtual paddock
This article explains how to assign unassigned animals to a new mob and then activate a virtual paddock (VP) for that mob. The Animals with No Mob list in the Mobs panel makes it easy to identify and move unassigned animals in one step. You will need access to the web application.
Before you start. Animals must already be registered in eShepherd with neckbands fitted before they can be assigned to a mob.
Step 1. Select Mobs from the top navigation bar to open the Mobs panel. Locate Animals with No Mob and click it to open the animal list.

Step 2. The Animals panel will open showing all unmob animals. Review the list to confirm these are the animals you want to assign.

Step 3. Tick the master checkbox at the top of the list to select all animals. The toolbar at the bottom will show a Choose Mob dropdown.

Step 4. Click the Choose Mob dropdown and select New Mob. A Mob Name field will appear at the bottom of the panel.

Step 5. Type a name for the new mob and select a colour from the colour picker. Then tap Confirm to create the mob.

Step 6. A Mob created successfully message will appear. The new mob is now visible in the Mobs panel, and Animals with No Mob will update to show (0).

Step 7. Tick the checkbox next to the newly created mob to select it, then tap the Turn On VP button in the bottom-right toolbar. The Turn On VP dialog will open — select Now under Type to activate immediately.

Step 8. Tap the To dropdown to open the virtual paddock list.

Step 9. Select the virtual paddock you want to move the mob into. The selected VP will be highlighted on the map. Tap the tick button to confirm.

Step 10. If a Potential Risk to Animals warning appears — for example, if some animals are located outside the VP — review the conditions and tap Turn On to proceed.

Step 11. The Status panel will open, showing the new VP activation for your mob with a status of Still confirming while the neckbands update.

Other Ways to Select Animals
The steps above use the Animals with No Mob list to select animals. You can also select animals in two other ways before assigning them to a mob:
- Map selection — click any animal on the map first to start a selection, then hold CTRL and drag a box over the animals you want. Release the mouse to confirm the selection.
- Animal list — go to the Animals panel, sort by mob to find unassigned animals, and tick individual animals or use shift-click to select a range.
Summary
This guide covers how to use the Animals with No Mob list to quickly assign unassigned animals to a new mob, and then activate a virtual paddock for that mob straight away. Once confirmed, the activation status can be monitored in the Status panel.
