How to use Heatmap 2.0

The Heatmap shows you where your animals have been spending their time, plotted on the map as a honeycomb grid (hexagonal cells). Dark orange means animals camped or grazed heavily in that spot. Light orange means they passed through. Grey means little to no recorded activity. It's a quick way to see grazing pressure, camp areas, and underutilised pasture at a glance.

Heatmap is available from Mobs, Animals, Virtual Paddocks, and Physical Paddocks — select any record and activate it from the toolbar.

Heatmap on Mobs

Step 1. Open the Mobs panel and tick the checkbox next to the mob you want to view. The toolbar at the bottom of the screen will become active.

Step 2. Tap the heatmap icon in the bottom toolbar. The hexagonal heatmap overlay will appear on the map for the selected record. The heatmap panel appears at the bottom right, showing the Period date range, a timeline slider, the record name, and a colour legend showing activity from low to high.

Step 3. Zoom in to see finer detail. Each hexagon represents a geographic cell — the colour intensity shows how much time animals spent in that cell during the selected period. Orange and dark hexagons are high-activity areas; lighter grey hexagons are low-activity.

Step 4. To change the period, tap the Period dropdown in the bottom-right panel. Choose from Yesterday, Last 7 Days, Last 30 Days, or Custom to set a specific date range. The heatmap updates automatically. To temporarily hide the heatmap overlay without deselecting the record, tap the eye icon next to the record name in the panel.

Heatmap on Animals

Step 1. Open the Animals panel and tick the checkbox next to the animal you want to view. Tap the heatmap icon in the toolbar to load that animal's movement history over the selected period.

Step 2. Zoom out to see the full picture across the paddock. The hexagonal grid contracts to show broader movement patterns across the animal's range over the selected period.

Heatmap on VPs and Physical Paddocks

The heatmap also works on VPs and Physical Paddocks. Select a VP or physical paddock from its respective panel and tap the heatmap icon. This is particularly useful for assessing how evenly animals have grazed within a paddock — you can quickly spot underutilised corners, preferred camp areas, or consistent pressure on a particular zone.

Step 1. Open the VPs or Physical Paddocks panel and tick the checkbox next to the record you want to view. Tap the heatmap icon in the toolbar. The hexagonal overlay will appear within the boundary, coloured by grazing intensity over the selected period.

Step 2. Zoom in to see grazing distribution in detail. High-intensity hexagons reveal where animals spend most of their time, while lighter areas show underutilised pasture.

Summary

The hexagonal Heatmap gives you a clear, data-driven view of animal movement and grazing pressure across your property. Use it on mobs for a flock-level overview, on individual animals to spot outliers, and on VPs or physical paddocks to assess how evenly pasture is being utilised. Adjust the period to compare behaviour across different timeframes and use the eye icon to toggle the overlay on and off without losing your selection.
